Canada Announces $100 Million In Scholarships For Indian Students.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney paid an official visit to India from February 27 to March 2. During his visit, Carney met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reviewed progress across diverse areas of the India-Canada Strategic partnership.
The two leaders announced major deals, affirming cooperation in areas of energy, critical minerals, talent, climate and environment, science and technology architecture, digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and others.

Of all the deals, significant progress has been made in the education sector, as the leaders committed to heavily invest in “talent.” According to PIB release, “The leaders agreed to deepen cooperation between higher education institutions by enhancing industry aligned skills training; expanding joint; dual-degree and twinning programs.” This will significantly benefit Indian nationals, who wish to study in Canada as they can get millions of dollars in scholarship rewards, facilitated study pathways, and hybrid campuses.

How will it benefit Indian students?

Carney has announced the formulation of Canada-India Talent and Innovation Strategy to deepen education collaboration. A total of 13 new partnerships between Canadian and Indian universities, a Dalhousie University innovation campus in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Tirupati, and a new University of Toronto and McGill University Centres of Excellence in India have been announced.

The Canadian government has also announced measures for greater student and faculty exchanges and research collaboration. As part of this, the University of Toronto is offering 300 funded research positions for Indian students, with up to 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian students, worth USD 100 million.

MOU on cultural cooperation

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cultural cooperation is also signed. This include collaboration and exchanges among institutions in the performing arts, visual arts, music, books, and other creative industries, and entertainment technologies. Moreover, India’s All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Canada’s MITACS have announced measures to expand the Globalink Research Internship program. This will allow approximately 300 Indian undergraduate students to undertake research placements at Canadian universities annually.
