Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be stripped of their royal titles as thousands in Sussex sign a petition against the crown, while there were times in the past that crowns were regarded and honored by the people as gods and like their real parents, but now people consider the crowns as general public and in some of the countries crown don’t have any regarded values.

Charles Ross, a local campaigner from the city of Sussex of United Kingdom, started the petition to strip Meghan and Harry of their “unfairly acquired title”.

Initially the petition had only six signatures, however, the number of signatures has drastically increased and the petition has around 3,881 signatures at present. In fact, Brighton and Hove councilors will be considering whether they will reject the current usage of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles.

The petition in part, reads, “As residents of Brighton and Hove we call on Brighton and Hove Council to not refer to these individuals by such titles which we believe to be entirely non democratic and symbolic of the oppression of the general public by the wealthy elite.”

Meghan and Harry, who may already be in the U.S. for the holidays, have (smartly) not yet commented.

The Council is set to vote on it, but is unlikely to back it—also, they apparently have no say in the matter anyways, and as the Queen would be the one to confer or take away the title. The Sussex account, instead of highlighting the news, has chosen to share quotes of love and tolerance.

Harry and Meghan were given their titles by the queen after their wedding, meaning only she can actually strip them, not that she ever would. The royal family even made an announcement on their website at the time, saying, “The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince Henry of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. Prince Harry thus becomes His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Ms. Meghan Markle on marriage will become Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.”

Also, the petition was slammed by Thomas Mace-Archer-Mills, founder of the British Monarchists Society. “We are utterly dismayed that said petition has been signed by so many…Such a petition shows utter disdain and contempt for The Crown, not to mention copious amounts of disrespect to, and for, the Royal Family which undertakes thousands of engagements per year on behalf of the nation, in right of Her Majesty as The Crown.”

The petition also reads “Since the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle we, the people have been shocked by the exorbitant spending of this married couple. It is said that Meghan Markle (now the Duchess of Sussex) has spent well over one million pounds (£1000000.00) on just clothes in just under one year. Britain is facing Brexit and economic hardship. Many thousands are homeless and children are going to school with no breakfast, times are undoubtedly hard for working class Brits. Yet, the taxes that we pay, is going towards an American (not even British)  woman’s wardrobe allowance, also this allowance is not supporting British designers,  but mega expensive designers in America, Canada, or Europe. She (Markel) has shown little or no understanding of British culture, traditions or history.”

The petition has definitely ignited a debate. People are commenting over social media about how they feel about the petition being justified and some have also spoken against it.

This anti-royal petition also focuses on people trying to establish a more democratic concept; however this also suggests racism.  The duchess being American has been a target for many, since the royal couple tied the knot. The very idea of an American intrusion is ‘unfair’ for the natives, who have signed the petition.

Harry and Markle spent $3 million of taxpayers’ money renovating their new home, Frogmore Cottage, just in time for the birth of their first son, Archie Harrison, earlier this year. If Harry and Markle were no longer royal, their family wouldn’t be eligible to receive funds like this from the Queen’s Sovereign Grant, which goes toward supporting her and those who carry out royal duties on her behalf. That means Markle and Harry’s next child may not even be considered a “royal baby.”

However, it is mostly unlikely for the council to remove the titles from the pair, given that they had been gifted by the Queen when they got married. Meghan is the first-ever Duchess of Sussex while Harry is the first Duke of Sussex in 175 years. The queen decorated these titles, not the city council and considering this may be the city council doesn’t have the power to strip the titles.
