Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was earlier known as Prince Andrew, was arrested by police on suspicion of misconduct in public office. After about 11 hours in custody, he was released. Police said he is still under investigation, but no charges have been filed yet.
He was arrested early Thursday at his home. Police are investigating his past connection with the late Jeffrey Epstein. Officers searched his house and are also investigating another property.
This is a rare event. It is the first time in almost 400 years that a senior member of the British royal family has been arrested.
Reaction from the Royal Family
King Charles III made a short statement about his brother’s arrest. He said, “The law must take its course.” He did not say anything more while the investigation continues.
The Thames Valley Police said a man in his 60s from Norfolk was arrested. They did not officially name him, following normal police rules. Andrew, who is 66 years old, now lives in Norfolk after leaving his home near Windsor Castle earlier this month.
What Are the Allegations?
Police are looking into claims that Andrew shared trade information with Jeffrey Epstein in 2010 while he was serving as the UK’s special trade envoy.
The U.S. Justice Department recently released letters between Andrew and Epstein as part of a wider investigation into Epstein’s activities.
Police said they have started a formal investigation and understand there is strong public interest. They will share updates when possible.
Public and Family Response
Photos online showed police cars outside Andrew’s home in Norfolk. He has denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein.
These new allegations are different from earlier claims made by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual misconduct when she was 17. She died by suicide last year.
Her family said they feel some relief after the arrest and said that no one is above the law — not even royalty. They added that Andrew was “never a prince” and said Virginia stood up for survivors everywhere.
